The biofuels joint venture of BP and DuPont has filed a lawsuit alleging that biofuels company Gevo Inc. is infringing on one of its patents.

Englewood, Colo.-based Gevo disclosed Wednesday that Butamax Advanced Biofuels filed the complaint Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Delaware. The Butamax patent is for certain methods of producing isobutanol, which has been touted as an option for providing fuel with lower greenhouse emissions.

Gevo has said it uses proprietary yeast to ferment corn sugars into isobutanol. It says it intends to vigorously defend the lawsuit.

Butamax, headquartered in Wilmington, Del., also filed a complaint in January alleging Gevo was infringing on a different patent.
