Copper Thieves Disable Water Filtration Plant

Metal thieves who pilfered a large amount of copper wiring from a filtration plant have knocked out water service to thousands in Puerto Rico.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Metal thieves who pilfered a large amount of copper wiring from a filtration plant have knocked out water service to thousands in Puerto Rico.

The U.S. territory's water utility says crews are working to restore service in the northeastern town of Canovanas.

Police say they have little information, but more than one person was involved in the theft early Monday.

Metal thieves commonly take stolen copper to recycling centers for quick cash.

Officials hope to restore water service by early Tuesday.
