Maine Base To Become Aircraft Manufacturing Plant

Newly formed Kestrel Aircraft plans to start an aircraft manufacturing operation at Maine's Brunswick Naval Air Station after the base closes, creating up to 300 jobs.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- A newly formed company plans to start an aircraft manufacturing operation at Maine's Brunswick Naval Air Station after the base closes, creating up to 300 jobs.

Gov. John Baldacci says Kestrel Aircraft Co. will start with 50 to 75 jobs, and then expand. The company says it will manufacture aircraft utilizing composites at Brunswick Landing.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said Friday at the announcement in the Augusta State Airport that "any time you talk about new jobs coming to Maine -- that's good news."

The Navy has removed its aircraft and most personnel, and is preparing to transfer the base to civilian authority. The Brunswick base is due to close next May.
