WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) -- The Canadian Autoworkers Union says Ford Canada is laying off 489 employees at its engine plant in Windsor, Ontario.
Marc Renaud, vice president of a local union chapter, said Thursday that Ford is closing down one shift at the Windsor Engine Annex starting Nov. 1 as part of a plan announced earlier this year.
About 150 workers will be offered jobs at the company's plant in Essex, Ontario, where Ford is recalling some staff.
The news comes a day after General Motors Canada closed its transmission plant in the southwestern Ontario city, ending a 90-year history.
