WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's administration suggested on Tuesday creating a nearly $1 billion trust fund for the environmental clean-up of 90 General Motors Co manufacturing sites in 14 states.

White House Economic Advisor Larry Summers told a meeting hosted by the White House, the labor department and think-tank the Brookings Institution, that $536 million for cleaning up properties and $300 million for updating them will come from federal money "provided for the wind-down of the old GM."

The White House hopes to put the former factories back into productive use.
