Ind. Barge Builders Return To Work After Strike

Days after ending their monthlong strike, about 600 Jeffboat workers are back on the job at the barge builder's southern Indiana manufacturing plant.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- Days after ending their monthlong strike, about 600 Jeffboat workers are back on the job at the barge builder\'s southern Indiana manufacturing plant.

Workers voted 445-71 Sunday to approve a three-year contract that calls for no pay increases in the first year, 1 percent in the second and 2 percent in the third.

Teamsters Local 89 President Fred Zuckerman says workers\' health care contributions will rise about 10 percent. But he said the contract preserves health care benefits for union workers that are superior to those granted to the plant\'s nonunion workers.

Union workers walked off the job April 3, idling the Jeffersonville shipyard owned by American Commercial Lines, which is the nation\'s largest inland shipbuilder.

Company CEO Mike Ryan says the contract will "position the shipyard for future growth."
