GALLATIN, Tenn. (AP) — Republican Gov. Bill Haslam has kicked off a week to promote the manufacturing sector with a visit to the Beretta plant in Gallatin.

The Monday visit coincided with the 490th anniversary of the Italian gunmaker's first military contract. Company officials also announced that the plant has been certified by the Army to produce its military firearms at the facility.

The governor also plans visit this week to automotive supplier Denso in Maryville, Alcoa in Friendsville and General Motors in Spring Hill.

Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd is making stops at Gestamp in Chattanooga, ATC Automation and Ficosa North America in Cookeville, Smith & Nephew in Memphis and Bridgestone Americas in La Vergne.

Manufacturing Week is an effort to encourage more students to pursue careers in the sector.
