PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich says the owners of 10,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles in the state stand to benefit from a massive federal class-action settlement.

As part of the agreement announced Tuesday, Volkswagen will spend up to $15.3 billion to settle consumer lawsuits and government allegations that it cheated on emissions tests.

VW has agreed to either buy back or repair the vehicles and owners will get payments of $5,100 to $10,000.

Final approval of the settlement is expected in October.

The attorney general's office said the federal settlement won't affect Arizona's ongoing consumer fraud lawsuit against Volkswagen.

In that case, prosecutors say Arizona consumers were subject to numerous misleading advertisements that the vehicles were environmentally friendly and fuel efficient.
