FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — A Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of paper and fiber-based material products has announced that it will open an $80 million production facility in Fort Smith.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/21GmdlA ) reported Tuesday that Glatfelter will invest $80 million in the new facility that will create up to 83 jobs. The company said in a statement that the facility will be used for products including those in the "wipes and hygiene markets." It's expected to open in late 2017.

Chris Astley, president of Glatfelter's Advanced Airlaid Materials Business Unit, said that a facility in Fort Smith will provide the company with closer proximity to key suppliers and customers, as well as linking the company to highly efficient transportation routes in the South.

Company officials say hiring plans are still being developed.
