BOSTON (AP) — Eight University of Massachusetts researchers developing everything from an electronic "tongue" for food safety tests to energy-absorbing material for helmets have been awarded $40,000 each in grants.
The $320,000 in financing comes from the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center, a state organization that helps turn technology developed at state research institutions into private industry.
UMass President Marty Meehan said breakthroughs at all five UMass campuses are helping fuel the state's economy by aiding the creation of new startup companies, industries and jobs.
Meehan said the number of patents awarded to UMass faculty rose to 65 in the 2015 fiscal year, generating about $34 million in licensing income.
The grants are focused on developing technologies in advanced manufacturing and materials, clean energy, communications, cybersecurity, defense, information technology, life sciences and marine science.
