United States Steel Corp. spent $1.04 million in the second quarter to lobby Congress and federal agencies on legislation ranging from clean energy to trade, according to a recent report.

The total was just shy of the $1.1 million that the steel manufacturer spent on lobbying in the year-ago quarter and slightly more than the $960,000 it spent in the first quarter.

From April to June, U.S. Steel lobbied on a number of issues, including the impact on the domestic steel industry of chemical facility anti-terrorism legislation. The Pittsburgh company also addressed a proposed ban on poisonous additives, legislation to modernize food safety and "Buy America" requirements for public transportation and highway projects.

Other topics included trade enforcement, clean energy and tax benefits, according to a report filed July 14 with the House clerk's office.
