Ariad Names R & D President

Drug developer said it named Chief Scientific Officer Timothy P. Clackson as its first president of research and development.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- Ariad Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Wednesday it named Chief Scientific Officer Timothy P. Clackson the drug developer's first president of research and development.

The Cambridge, Mass., company said Clackson will establish an "integrated research and development organization" whose work will range from discovery to advanced clinical development.

Clackson will continue to oversee manufacturing and program and alliance management, and he will continue reporting to Chairman and CEO Harvey J. Berger. Clackson joined Ariad in 1994 and became senior vice president and chief scientific officer in September 2003.

Ariad shares fell 9 cents to $3.18 in Wednesday afternoon trading as the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell slightly.
