Move Over Alcoa: Russian Company Takes Top Spot

United Company RUSAL will replace Alcoa as leading aluminum producer.

RUSAL, the world’s third largest aluminum producer, Sual Group, one of the world’s top ten aluminum producers, and Glencore International AG, a Swiss natural resources group, announced Monday that they have signed a merger agreement.

The three companies will join to form United Company RUSAL, becoming the world’s largest aluminum and alumina producer. United Company RUSAL will employ over 110,000 people in 17 countries. The annual production volume is anticipated to be 4 million tons of aluminum and 11 million tons of alumina.

United Company RUSAL will account for 12.5 percent of global aluminum and 16 percent of global alumina production.

The agreement is expected to be complete by April 1, 2007.
