Salon has delved deeper into the mystery of the YouTube video featuring a Japanese scientist who allegedly created a form of meat by extracting protein from human excrement. According to the publication, the video was first released on YouTube in October 2010, where it remained rather unnoticed until April 2011 when another YouTube user uploaded the same video. In June, a blog picked up the story, fueling growing media attention until several other news outlets, including Fox News, released the story.
But the mystery deepens. According to Salon, very similar news stories appeared all the way back in the 1990s. After doing a bit of research, the publication found that a scientist mentioned in one of the original 90s news stories does, in fact, exist, and Salon has reached out to him to see if the mystery of the “crapburger” can be solved. Until then, I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see…
