About 200 people rallied in Oxford against a proposed power plant as state regulators inspected the site before a public meeting on the project.

The Republican-American reports that protesters held signs on Thursday urging rejection of the CPV Towantic Energy Center. Connecticut Siting Council members walked through the site as they considered whether to approve the project.

Competitive Power Ventures is proposing an 805-megawatt plant fueled by natural gas on 26 acres in an industrial park. The company, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, with an office in Braintree, Massachusetts, says the plant would generate enough electricity to power more than 750,000 homes.

Company officials are scheduled to present information about the project at Oxford High School at 3 p.m. The public can comment beginning at 6:30 p.m.
