Metso Improves Its Turbine Control

HELSINKI -- Metso has improved metsoDNA Turbine Control by integrating fast turbine control and other key features into the metsoDNA control system to further improve its cost efficiency and ease of maintenance for customers.

The fast, redundant control handles control cycles down to 5 ms for any size of turbine. A new servo valve control I/O card can control any mA range of servo valves. Servo valve control is normally made redundant, and it can also be triple redundant. The valve position feedback is read by new fast mA input or by new fast LVDT input. The whole configuration is performed by Metso’s well-tested standard function blocks.

Metso’s expertise in machine condition monitoring is now used to better serve turbine automation customers. Vibration monitoring and protection features are integrated into the I/O cards and process controllers. New I/O cards can read standard acceleration and eddy current sensors. This minimizes the need for sensor changes from the original design of the turbine. Integrated condition monitoring improves the system diagnostics and eliminates any separate stand-alone system. Measurements can be used for protection and normal online monitoring, as well as for more developed diagnostics purposes.

The integration eliminates many traditionally extra transmitters and amplifiers. This improves the turbine control’s capability and flexibility. At the same time, the design, startup and future maintenance are made easier and less time consuming by minimizing the need for “black boxes”. The high integration level makes Metso’s solution cost efficient.

metsoDNA is used to control steam, gas and hydro turbines around the world. References are both from retrofitting old installations and greenfield installations.
