Details Emerge from Lamborghini’s First Hybrid Super Sports Car

In the carmaker's 60-year history, only two other V12 cars have been equipped with a transverse rear gearbox.

Lamborghini on Tuesday unveiled the first details of the company's first hybrid super sports car, a high performance electrified vehicle (HPEV) codenamed LB744.

The LB744 will have a new architecture, including a powertrain that delivers more than 1,000 CV in total. A new 12-cylinder internal combustion engine is mated to three electric motors, two in the front axle and one integrated above a new transversal eight-speed double-clutch gearbox. The new eight gear dual clutch system provides better car balance and a compact design as well as more room in the cabin. 

This is also the first time four wheel drive will be capable in full electric mode. 

The company, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, will debut the LB744 on April 4 in New York before the New York International Auto Show. 

The carmaker rotated the car's V12 180 degrees to create an entirely new architecture. 

The electric motor in the gearbox has three primary functions, it starts the V12 engine, it's able to recharge the battery and also deliviers additional torque.

The plug-in hybrid super car is equipped with a lightweight high-power lithium ion battery located within the transmission tunnel in the middle of the chassis. The design should reduce emissions some 30% compared to the previous V12 while maximizing performance.

In Lamborghini's 60-year history, only two other V12 cars have been equipped with a transverse rear gearbox: the 1966 Miura, which also had a mid-rear transverse engine layout, and the track-focused hypercar Essenza SCV12.

According to Reuters, the LB744's actual name will be announced at the end of the month and will be a replacement for the Aventador. More HPEVs are in development. 

Lamborghini plans to produce full battery-electric vehicles, but not until at least 2028.
