Metal Plant Explosion Kills Maintenance Worker

The plant suffered "pretty catastrophic" damage.

An explosion and fire took place at the I. Schumann & Co. metal plant in Bedford, Ohio.

The disaster killed one maintenance worker and injured 13 others.

Debris from the explosion traveled hundreds of yards and damaged cars.

An official reported that the plant’s interior suffered “pretty catastrophic” damage.

The explosion’s cause remains unknown.

The plant recycles scrap metal into brass and bronze pellets and ingots.

A local fire captain said the building has been in good standing regarding fire safety inspections.

However, molten metal caused an explosion at the same plant in April 2006.
