Chip Shortage Forcing Plant Closures

Subaru and Suzuki are the most recent to be affected.

Subaru Corp. is ending production at Japan’s Gunma plants in July, according to Reuters.

The Japanese automaker's manufacturing division cited a shortage of semiconductors as the reason.

The plants are located northwest of Tokyo and will be inactive starting July 16.

Suzuki Motor Corp. will potentially follow suit with its plants at Kosai and Sagara in Shizuoka, Japan.

The pause in production at the Suzuki plants would be for two and seven days, respectively, in July. Dates have yet to be set.

Suzuki spokesperson said the auto manufacturer is "continuing to make adjustments to minimize the impact.”

The chip shortage is a global issue, most notably in Taiwan, which accounts for over half of the world's output of chips.
