OSHA Fines Rexnord $130K After Worker Amputation

Federal safety officials have proposed a $130,500 fine for a Milwaukee company where a worker's arm was amputated as she tried to clean a machine.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Federal safety officials have proposed a $130,500 fine for a Milwaukee company where a worker's arm was amputated as she tried to clean a machine.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced the fine Thursday against Rexnord Industries.

The company makes power-transmission and water-management products.

OSHA says the woman lost her arm when she reached into a mechanical power press and it unexpectedly began to run.

OSHA issued eight citations, including one with a proposed $70,000 penalty for failing to provide proper guarding on the machine. It also says the company failed to correct a previous violation.

Rexnord spokesman Jay Lee says the company plans to present OSHA with evidence to support a potential adjustment to the penalties.
