Jobs In Jeopardy After Allen Foods Bankruptcy

The 2,400 employees of Allen Family Foods Inc. are waiting to see what happens to their jobs as the company winds its way through bankruptcy.

SEAFORD, Del. (AP) -- The 2,400 employees of Seaford, Del.-based poultry producer Allen Family Foods Inc. are waiting to see what happens to their jobs as the company winds its way through bankruptcy.

The company filed for bankruptcy protection last week, saying it plans to sell nearly all of its assets to a new affiliate of Mountaire Farms of Delaware Inc., which may add an undetermined number of jobs. Allen Family Foods has facilities in Delaware, Maryland and North Carolina, processing about 1.6 million birds weekly, with gross annual revenues of about $380 million.

Delaware Reps. Daniel B. Short, R-Seaford, Biff Lee, R-Laurel, David L. Wilson, R-Lincoln, and Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, said they hope to join Gov. Jack Markell and state economic development officials to help minimize the impact on the company's employees and growers.
