ASML 1Q Earnings More Than Triple

Europe's largest supplier of equipment to computer chip makers says its first quarter earnings more than tripled to $570 million on strong customer demand.

AMSTERDAM (AP) -- ASML Holding NV, Europe's largest supplier of equipment to computer chip makers such as Intel and Samsung, says its first quarter earnings more than tripled on strong customer demand, and it expects record profits in 2011, despite fallout from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters in Japan.

Net profit was euro395 million ($570 million), from euro107 million, while revenues were up 95 percent to euro1.45 billion, the company said Wednesday.

Chief executive Eric Meurice said computer chip makers were "cautious" about how the disasters would affect their supply lines, but they still need to invest in new capacity. He estimated ASML's order backlog at euro3.33 billion.

ASML's lithography systems are used to map out the circuitry of semiconductors.
