Volkswagen Workers Reach New Wage Deal

Europe's largest automaker, says it has reached a new wage agreement with some 100,000 workers in western Germany.

BERLIN (AP) -- Volkswagen AG, Europe's largest automaker, says it has reached a new wage agreement with some 100,000 workers in western Germany.

The company said Tuesday that workers will receive a 3.2 percent wage increase as of May 1, in addition to a one-time payment equal to one percent of their annual salary, or a minimum of euro500 ($678).

The agreement affects workers in VW factories in Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Hannover, Salzgitter, Emden and Kassel and covers the next 16 months. It also applies to several VW subsidiaries.

Volkswagen said in January that 2010 sales rose by 13.5 percent to above 7 million units for the first time.

The Volkswagen group includes brands such as Audi, Skoda and Seat.
