Anthera Pharma 4Q Loss Widens

Pharmaceutical company said Wednesday its fourth-quarter loss widened on higher expenses.

HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) -- Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Wednesday its fourth-quarter loss widened on higher expenses.

The company lost $13 million, or 40 cents per share, compared with a loss of $1.5 million, or 95 cents per share, during the same period a year prior. The development-stage company does not have a product on the market and reported no revenue for either quarter.

Operating expenses surged to $12.9 million from $1.4 million, as the company continued developing a potential heart condition drug, along with development of a potential lupus treatment.

For the full year, the company lost $40.4 million, or $1.76 per share, compared with a loss of $12.2 million, or $8.06 per share, in 2009.

In morning trading, shares of Anthera added 20 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $5.41.
