LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan manufacturers hope Gov. Rick Snyder talks about plans to lower business taxes when he gives his first State of the State address Wednesday.
Michigan Manufacturers Association Vice President Michael Johnston said Tuesday that manufacturers pay an unfair share of state business taxes. He hopes the new Republican governor eventually will consider doing away with the personal property tax, which brings in about $1 billion a year.
Snyder wants to replace the Michigan Business Tax with a flat 6 percent corporate income tax on major businesses, but hasn't given many details. Johnston has reservations about Snyder's plan because he doesn't know how it would work
He says all businesses should pay tax in Michigan, but the tax rate needs to be lower if the state is to be globally competitive.
