Kia Banks Record-High Net Profit

Automaker says third-quarter net profit rose 66 percent to a record high amid double-digit gains in sales volume and revenue.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Kia Motors Corp. says third-quarter net profit rose 66 percent to a record high amid double-digit gains in sales volume and revenue.

Kia, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Co., earned 666.61 billion won ($592.75 million) in the three months ended Sept. 30. It said Friday that it had net profit of 402 billion won the year before. Kia has a plant in West Point, Ga.

Kia spokesman Michaerl Choo says the profit result was Kia's best ever on a quarterly basis, beating the 604 billion recorded in the final three months of 2009.

Sales in the quarter rose 26 percent to 5.69 trillion won from 4.51 trillion won a year earlier. Kia sold 541,884 vehicles worldwide during the third quarter, 24 percent higher than the same period last year.
