Cree To Hire 240 Workers

Durham-based LED maker said it plans to hire 240 new workers in the second big expansion for the company since last October.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Durham-based Cree Inc. plans to hire 240 new workers in the second big expansion for the company since last October.

The office of Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Miller says the announcement is being made in Durham on Monday. The new jobs will be part of a $130 million investment the company is making.

Company executive Greg Merritt says the new jobs are in addition to a plan announced last year to hire 575 new workers by the end of 2012.

Cree makes energy-efficient LED lighting. Their products have been used everywhere from the Olympic Games in Beijing to the cafeteria in a congressional office building.

Gov. Beverly Perdue and other officials were expected to be on hand for the announcement.
