Ford Edge Sales Reach 400,000

Automaker said Tuesday that it has sold 400,000 of its Edge crossovers since the vehicle first hit the market in late 2006.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. said it has sold 400,000 of its Edge crossovers since the vehicle first hit the market in late 2006.

As of July, sales of the Edge are up 33 percent from last year, versus a 15 percent increase for the broader auto industry. Crossovers like the Edge are vehicles with attributes of an SUV but which are built on car bodies instead of light trucks.

The company said the 2011 Edge, which carries a manufacturer's suggested price of $27,220, began shipping from the company's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario last weekend.

Sales of Ford as a whole are up 24 percent so far this year.

Shares of Ford rose 27 cents to $12.26 in morning trading.
