MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Madison company has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle allegations that it illegally imported iodine.
Dairy farm equipment maker Boumatic LLC was accused by the Drug Enforcement Administration of not obtaining the proper certificates and registration to import iodine last year.
Under the settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, the company does not admit any wrongdoing.
Under federal rules, iodine is considered a controlled substance because its crystals have been used to make methamphetamine. That means companies that import it for manufacturing and other purposes must obtain certificates to do so in some cases.
