Wabtec Wins $44 Million Locomotive Order

Virginia Railway Express ordered $44 million worth of commuter locomotives, with an option to buy another eight.

WILMERDING, Pa. (AP) -- Wabtec Corp. said Tuesday it got a $44 million order for commuter locomotives from Virginia Railway Express.

Delivery is scheduled to begin next summer.

Wabtec said VRE, which serves commuters in northern and central Virginia, used funds from federal earmarks by Sen. James Webb, D-Va., and federal stimulus money to boost its order from five to 12 locomotives.

The railway has an option to buy another eight locomotives, which could push the value of the sale to more than $73 million.

The locomotives will be made in Boise, Idaho.

Wabtec shares gained 48 cents to $34.70 in morning trading.
