Obama: ‘Buy American’ Law Not Harmful To Canada

President Barack Obama says controversial ‘buy American’ provisions in the U.S. stimulus package have not endangered trade with Canada.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) -- President Barack Obama says controversial "buy American" provisions in the U.S. stimulus package have not endangered trade with Canada.

Standing next to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Obama said again Monday that he opposed the provisions that deeply angered the United States' northern neighbor and largest trading partner.

But, Obama said, he did not fight the issue because his administration needed to move swiftly in January to get money into the U.S. economy through the stimulus legislation.

Obama said Harper raises the issue each time the two leaders meet, as they did Sunday and Monday along with Mexican Mexican President Felipe Calderon at the North American Leaders summit.
