PARIS (AP) -- Airbus says Ethiopian Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding to buy 12 of its Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.

The A350-900s have an average list price of $241 million, giving the deal an estimated potential value of $2.9 billion.

The commitment is not yet a firm order for the plane. The A350 is Airbus' future long-haul, medium capacity rival to Boeing Co.'s planned 787.
