Canada Wholesale Trade Down In May

Wholesale sales fell 0.3 percent to $40.1 billion in May, their eighth straight drop and their lowest level since December 2005.

OTTAWA (CP) -- Wholesale sales fell 0.3 percent to $40.1 billion in May, their eighth straight drop and their lowest level since December 2005.

Statistics Canada reports wholesale sales by volume were unchanged.

The agency says weaker sales in the machinery and equipment, food, and metal products trade groups were the major factors contributing to the decline.

Four of the seven sectors, accounting for just over half of total wholesale sales, dropped in May.
