Sambonet Buys Porcelain Maker Rosenthal

Italian cutlery maker purchased German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, for an undisclosed price.

BERLIN (AP) -- Italian cutlery maker Sambonet has bought German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal, the German company's bankruptcy administrator said Monday.

Rosenthal filed for bankruptcy protection at the beginning of this year, shortly after a similar move by majority shareholder Waterford Wedgwood PLC.

Bankruptcy administrator Volker Boehm gave no details of the price paid by Sambonet Paderno Industrie Spa.

However, the Italian company has said it wants to maintain all of Rosenthal GmbH's production sites and make significant investments in the company over the coming years, he said in a statement.

Selb, Germany-based Rosenthal, founded in 1879, has some 1,200 employees, about 1,000 of them in Germany.

During the bankruptcy process, about 300 people were laid off.
