Pilgrim's Pride Rejects Bid For Arkansas Plant

EL DORADO, Ark. (AP) -- Pilgrim's Pride Corp. has rejected a bid by a poultry company that wanted to buy Pilgrim's shuttered chicken processing plant in El Dorado.

A federal bankruptcy judge ordered Pilgrim's and the El Dorado Poultry Co. to go into mediation and try to agree on a sale of the property.

Pilgrim's filed for protection in December. About 1,500 people worked at the El Dorado plant before it began laying off employees prior to closure on May 8.

El Dorado Chamber of Commerce Chairman Don Wales says details of the offer for the plant were not made public. He says the bankruptcy court gave the sides two weeks to negotiate.
