Ford: European Sales Up 16 Percent In March

Automaker says its sales in Europe were up 16.1 percent on the year in March and its market share hit a 12-year high.

BERLIN (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. says its sales in Europe were up 16.1 percent on the year in March and its market share hit a 12-year high.

Ford said Thursday that it sold 192,500 vehicles on the continent last month -- a performance which it said made it No. 1 in Europe. It said its market share was 10.4 percent, its best showing since August 1998.

The company said it sold 391,100 vehicles in Europe in the first quarter -- a year-on-year increase of 9.1 percent. It said its market share was unchanged on the year at 9.4 percent.

Ford of Europe vice president Wolfgang Schneider said that after a good first quarter "we can expect some further challenges in the months ahead as more scrappage schemes are phased out."
