German Industrial Output Edges Upward

Economy Ministry said industrial output rose 0.6 percent in January as an increase in manufacture of parts and components offset decline in construction.

FRANKFURT (AP) -- Official data shows German industrial output rose 0.6 percent in January from December as an increase in the manufacture of some products offset a decline in construction due to harsh winter weather.

The Economy Ministry said Monday the manufacture of parts and components reported a 3.3 percent increase in production, while record cold and snowfall during January was responsible for a 14.3 percent decline in the construction sector. But the cold also contributed to a near 9 percent increase in the production of energy compared with December.

In a two-month comparison, December and January together reported a slight 0.4 percent decline in industrial output compared to October and November.
