Pet Treat Company Acquires Great Bend Packing

Redbarn, a California-based pet treat manufacturer, has purchased former Great Bend Packing plant in Kansas and plans to start production by mid-February.

GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) -- A California-based pet treat manufacturer has finalized its purchase of the former Great Bend Packing plant and plans to relocate to Barton County by mid-February.

Redbarn, based in Long Beach, Calif., closed the deal on New Year's Eve and will formally announce it at a news conference Thursday. The sales price was not disclosed.

Howard Bloxam, one of the company's founders, says Redbarn will be operating in Great Bend by mid-February and close its California plant by mid-April.

The Great Bend City Council and Barton County Commission each approved incentive packages to attract Redbarn to the plant, which has been closed since July.

In exchange, Redbarn has agreed to be in production in six months, stay in Barton County for three years and create 175 jobs within two years.
