EU Truck Sales Drop 38 Percent

Sales of trucks, vans and buses dropped a record 38.7 percent in February from a year ago, car makers' association ACEA said Wednesday.

BRUSSELS (AP) -- EU sales of trucks, vans and buses dropped a record 38.7 percent in February from a year ago, car makers' association ACEA said Wednesday.

The group, which represents commercial vehicle makers Scania AB, Man AG, Volkswagen AG, AB Volvo, DAF Trucks and Iveco SpA, has warned that they are suffering badly as companies cut back big-ticket purchases.

Nearly 130,000 commercial vehicles were sold last month, ACEA said, even worse than a 35.6 percent year-on-year drop in January.

The biggest chunk of the market, vans, saw sales slump by more than half in Britain and Spain, where the end of a construction boom has slowed economic growth and hiked unemployment.
