German Exports Slump In January

World's largest exporter saw a 20 percent drop in exports as the global economic crisis took its toll on foreign demand, the Federal Statistical Office reported.

BERLIN (AP) -- Germany, the world's largest exporter, saw a 20 percent drop in exports in January as the global economic crisis took its toll on foreign demand, the Federal Statistical Office reported Tuesday.

German exports fell to euro66.6 billion in January 2009, 20.7 percent lower than the euro84 billion reported in January 2008, the office said in a release of preliminary figures.

Imports dropped to euro58.1 billion, down 12.9 percent from euro66.7 in January 2008.

Compared to December 2008, exports were down more than 3 percent from euro67.2 billion, while imports dropped about 1 percent from euro60 billion.
