Engine maker says it will lay off 1,000 staff worldwide over the coming months due to the worldwide economic slowdown.

MONTREAL (CP) -- Quebec-based Pratt & Whitney Canada says it will lay off 1,000 staff worldwide over the coming months.

The engine maker says the cuts are necessary because of the worldwide economic slowdown.

The layoffs will affect those in the the manufacturing sector as well as those who handle the company's administrative and customer-service operations.

It is not immediately known where the cuts will take place.

Pratt & Whitney Canada has 10,000 employees, including 7,000 in Canada.

The company is a unit of U.S.-based United Technologies.
