Clariant Cutting 1,000 Jobs

Specialty chemicals company cutting 1,000 jobs as a result of a sharp decline in demand for its products in the textile, leather, automotive and construction industries.

MUTTENZ, Switzerland (AP) -- Specialty chemicals company Clariant AG said Tuesday it is cutting 1,000 jobs this year.

Clariant said the job cuts are the result of a sharp decline in customer demand for its products in the textile, leather, automotive and construction industries.

The company said its overall sales last year dropped 5 percent to 8.1 billion Swiss francs ($7.14 billion), from 8.5 billion francs in 2007.

Clariant reports its full-year results on Feb. 17.
