Romanian Auto Workers Demand Job Protection

Some 2,000 employees of carmaker Dacia Renault have held a rally to demand the government protect jobs in the country's auto industry.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -- Some 2,000 employees of carmaker Dacia Renault have held a rally to demand the government protect jobs in the country's auto industry.

The carmaker announced Monday it was temporarily shutting a plant in the central town of Mioveni that only reopened this week after another monthlong closure.

Workers gathered on Tuesday in downtown Mioveni, some 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of the capital Bucharest to press their demands.

The French-Romanian company said it would stop building cars for two weeks from Jan. 26 at the factory. The company's Romanian car sales in November were half of what they were a year earlier.
