Volvo Cutting 1,600 Jobs In Sweden

Swedish truck maker AB Volvo said Tuesday it will lay off more than 1,600 employees in Sweden as it slows production amid falling demand for trucks.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Swedish truck maker AB Volvo said Tuesday it will lay off more than 1,600 employees in Sweden as it slows production amid falling demand for trucks.

The layoffs will be in addition to more than 2,000 job cuts announced by the truck unit last year, Volvo spokesman Stefan Karlsson said.

He said the new cuts involved about 1,020 workers at two production plants in Sweden and 600 workers at Volvo's Powertrain unit, which makes engines, gear boxes and rear axles for trucks.

"The reason for this is primarily a weak order intake right now and that there are no real signs of improvement," Karlsson said.

AB Volvo also makes buses, construction equipment and components for aircraft engines. It's a separate company from Volvo Cars, which is owned by Ford Motor Co.
