Hamilton Sundstrand To Lay Off 65 Workers

Union president says aerospace manufacturer is laying off 65 manufacturing workers in Rockford, Ill., starting May 31.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- A union president says aerospace manufacturer Hamilton Sundstrand is laying off 65 manufacturing workers in Rockford starting May 31.

Ted Dever is president of United Auto Workers Local 592. He tells the Rockford Register Star the company told the union about the layoffs this week.

Hamilton Sundstrand employs about 2,200 people in Rockford. It has shifted hundreds of production jobs over the past few years to Asia.

The company has said its decision to shift manufacturing jobs to Singapore has been due to global economic pressures.

But the Windsor Locks, Connecticut-based company has added engineering jobs. The company said in February it would hire 150 engineers this year.
