Schwan Closing South Carolina Plant

Schwan Food Company closing a dessert plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in March; closure will affect 525 workers.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — The Schwan Food Company says it is closing a dessert plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in March. The plant employs 525 workers.

Employees at the Mrs. Smith plant say they were told Thursday the plant was shutting down.

Schwan's Senior Vice President Bill McCormack says the company decided to close the plant because it needs to be more efficient as it faces global competition.

McCormack says Schwan will offer all the employees positions at other plants, or help them get other jobs.

Schwan is based in Marshall, Minnesota. The company says it is consolidating production at other plants.
