Auto Industry Researcher: SUV Market ‘Dried Up’

Market for sport utility vehicles is being taken over by crossover vehicles, says David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research.

MORAINE, Ohio (AP) — The future of General Motors Corp.'s plant in Moraine is clouded because the market for the sport utility vehicles made there is being taken over by crossover vehicles, and industry researcher said.

Workers at the plant make the GMC Envoy, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and similar vehicles. The market for the SUVs is being taken over by vehicles such as the Saturn Outlook, a hybrid of a smaller SUV and a minivan, said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.

''The market has pretty much just dried up, and in many respects just shifted to the crossover vehicles,'' Cole said. ''I think GM likes the plant and the workers. The real question is, is there a product queued up that would be a natural for the plant?''

Moraine economic development director Michael Davis said city leaders have received no warnings from GM of any changes at the plant.
