The Master Lock Company’s team of lockout experts help facilities create safer work environments and ensure lockout compliance through lockout program development, written lockout procedures, compliance training and inspections and audits.

Master Lock’s new Professional Lockout Services include:

Alternative Methods To Lockout

The ANSI/ASSE Z244.1 standard provides expanded guidance on alternative methods to lockout when it’s not possible or practical to fully shut down machinery. When full lockout is reasonably determined and documented not to be practical, procedures using alternative methods can provide a level of worker protection that is essentially equivalent to a zero-energy condition. OSHA recognizes alternative methods as exceptions.

The Master Lock Company offers on-site evaluation services and in-person trainings for the development of alternative methods.

  • Alternative Procedures Development Service: In this on-site service, Master Lock technicians will analyze machinery, evaluate the need for energy to be present, perform risk assessments, and document alternative procedures to help safeguard personnel. Alternative procedures are created following a job safety analysis/risk assessment format. The development of all machine-specific alternative procedures will follow the ANSI/ASSE Z244.1-2016 standard.
  • Training: This specialized training is delivered by Master Lock machinery experts in hands-on sessions over two days. It begins with lockout procedure writing for full isolation. Participants will then learn how to evaluate and develop alternative protective methods and write procedures for production and maintenance operations that require energy. This course is based on ANSI/ASSE Z244.1-2016 guidance and meets OSHA 29CFR 1910.147 requirements.

Machine Guarding Assessment

Insufficient machine guarding is a leading cause of workplace injuries. The Master Lock Company’s Machine Guarding Assessment helps companies prevent accidents, improve job efficiencies and ensure compliance with the latest machine-guarding regulations.

Utilizing the applicable standards and current best practices, Master Lock technical experts will assess facilities’ machinery to determine if their existing guarding meets compliance requirements. After completing the assessments, Master Lock will deliver a written report summarizing the findings.

  • If guarding is determined to be inadequate, Master Lock will provide specific recommendations to achieve compliance.
  • If improvements could enhance the operating efficiency or support the use of alternative methods to lockout, Master Lock will provide suggestions.

Machine guarding assessments can be performed as a stand-alone service or in conjunction with other services such as lockout procedure development or as part of documenting alternative methods to lockout.

Confined Space Hazard Assessment

The Master Lock Company helps companies prepare for safe permit-required confined-space entries that meet the latest compliance requirements, including OSHA CFR 1910.146 Industrial Confined Spaces and 1926.1201-1213 Construction Confined Spaces or related Canadian regulations. Comprehensive confined space hazard assessments and training include:

  • Confined Space Hazard Assessments Service: In this on-site service, Master Lock technicians will analyze facilities’ identified confined spaces. They will evaluate and document all atmospheric, physical, mechanical and chemical hazards that are present or suspected to be present. Supportive entry permits specific to each space will also be developed.
  • Confined Space Hazard Assessments Training: In this on-site training, Master Lock technicians will teach key personnel how to assess confined space hazards and develop space-specific entry permits using manual documentation methods and database software. This course utilizes classroom presentations and hands-on workshops.

Rapid Access To Lockout Equipment

Keeping necessary lockout equipment close and easily accessible saves time, eliminates excuses and helps prevent damage and injuries. The Master Lock Company helps companies strategically deploy lockout equipment in the workplace, using value-added lean principles and 5S organization techniques, either by developing programs or training companies to create their own.

  • Rapid Access to Lockout Equipment Service: Working from existing lockout procedures, Master Lock representatives will perform a detailed on-site assessment of facilities and related machinery for the purpose of designing a lockout equipment deployment strategy. Master Lock will provide a departmental, work-cell or machine-specific plan that includes placement of the information and lockout equipment needed to control hazardous energy sources in the assessed areas.
  • Rapid Access to Lockout Equipment Training: Master Lock experts train personnel on lockout efficiency evaluations, allowing them to systematically assess work areas and objectively determine where rapid access techniques will improve lockout equipment deployment at the facility. This four-hour hands-on course uses existing lockout procedures to determine cellular or departmental lockout needs.
