The FDA has proposed new rules on imported produce, cheese and other foods in an attempt to further secure the domestic food supply. The guidelines would involve importer verification and improved audits of international food processing facilities. Michael Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner for foods, acknowledges that it may be difficult to prevent contamination abroad, but that the administration and importers must work to keep contaminated foods out of the domestic supply, saying,

"The onus is on us to detect the problem that has already occurred."
