Hospital Warns It May Have Served Contaminated Salads

A Delaware medical center is warning community residents that prepared salads that may have been contaminated with bacteria have been served at hospital cafes. Some salads were recalled because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

LEWES, Del. (AP) — Beebe Medical Center is warning community residents that prepared salads that may have been contaminated with bacteria that can cause illness have been served at hospital cafes.

The Lewes hospital said on its website last week that salads served from mid-August to late October had been recalled by Reser's Fine Foods of Oregon because of possible contamination the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

Beebe said the products, which included carrot, cucumber, pasta and potato salads and coleslaw, had been served at the main hospital campus cafés and the Gull House.

Symptoms from Listeria contamination can include fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, headache, loss of balance, and seizures. Sometimes those symptoms are preceded by vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

The hospital said so far, no one has become ill.
